Eight cores without paying for a GPU you won't use
The 8700F is the 8700G minus the Radeon 780M graphics — same eight Zen 4 cores, same 4.1GHz base and 5.0GHz boost, less money. If a graphics card is going in anyway, that integrated GPU was never going to earn its keep, and this is the cheaper, more sensible buy. Sixteen threads handle streaming while gaming, video edits and virtual machines comfortably, and 65W means it stays cool on a mid-range air cooler.
Cache and PCIe, as with all 8000-series
16MB of L3 and PCIe 4.0 rather than the 32MB and PCIe 5.0 you get on a Ryzen 7 9700X. In gaming that gap is real but modest; in multi-threaded work it barely shows. The other consequence of the "F" is that there's no display output at all without a card — worth remembering if you ever need to troubleshoot the machine with the GPU removed. For a mid-range AM5 build with a discrete card, the 8700F is strong value.
