Clock speed where games use it
Most games still lean hardest on one or two threads, and the 9600X's 5.4GHz boost is the highest of any Ryzen 5. Combined with Zen 5's improved instructions per clock, that makes it noticeably quicker than the 7600 in CPU-limited situations — competitive shooters at high refresh, simulation games, anything where the graphics card isn't the limit. It does all this inside a 65W envelope, so it's not a hot or demanding chip to cool.
Budget for the cooler
Unlike the 9600 and 7600, the 9600X ships without a cooler, so add a tower air cooler to the basket. Worth weighing up: if you aren't overclocking and just want frames per rand, the plain 9600 is cheaper, includes a cooler and lands within a few percent. The 9600X earns its premium if you want the top clocks in the Ryzen 5 line or you plan to tune it with PBO.
