A properly equipped B650 board in a case-friendly Micro-ATX footprint
Quick Specs
- AMD B650 chipset on Socket AM5 for Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 series processors
- Four DDR5 DIMM slots with AMD EXPO overclocking support
- PCIe 4.0 x16 graphics slot plus two M.2 sockets including PCIe Gen5 storage support
- 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet and USB 10Gbps Type-C on the rear panel
- Micro-ATX form factor with Phantom Gaming styling and heatsinked VRM
The sweet spot for a mid-range Ryzen build
B650 is where AM5 starts to make real sense, and the B650M PG Lightning delivers the important parts without the ATX price. You get CPU overclocking headroom, proper EXPO memory support so a 6000MT/s kit actually runs at 6000MT/s, and a VRM cooled well enough to hold a Ryzen 7 9700X at full boost. Four DIMM slots and dual M.2 mean you can start with 32GB and one drive, then expand later. In a Micro-ATX case it makes a compact, quiet gaming machine that still takes a full-size graphics card.
What it leaves out
There is no on-board Wi-Fi, so budget for a cable run or a USB dongle if your router is across the house. The graphics slot is PCIe 4.0 rather than 5.0, which costs nothing in real games today but is worth knowing. Audio is a solid Realtek codec rather than anything audiophile, and you will not find a POST code readout, on-board power button or 10 Gigabit networking here. Anyone running a Ryzen 9 with a sustained all-core workload, or who wants Wi-Fi built in, should look at the B850 range instead.
