The upgrade for an existing AM4 system
The Ryzen 7 5800X makes most sense if you already own an AM4 motherboard and DDR4 memory. Dropping it into a 500 series board, after a BIOS update, can bring a large jump in gaming frame-rate consistency and in multi-threaded jobs such as video exports and code compiling, without replacing the board or RAM. It is unlocked, so you can tune it with AMD Ryzen Master or use Precision Boost Overdrive. If you are building a brand-new PC from scratch and want DDR5, a newer AM5 platform is the better long-term buy.
What you need alongside it
There are two important requirements. First, AMD lists this chip as having no integrated graphics, so a graphics card is required before you get any picture. Second, AMD states that no cooler is included and recommends a premium air cooler, which makes sense for a 105W part. Budget for both if you are coming from a chip with a boxed cooler or built-in graphics. Memory support is DDR4 only, up to 3200 MT/s. Older 300 and 400 series boards are not covered in our sources, so check your board maker's CPU support list.

Before you buy
Which motherboards will this CPU fit?
It uses the AM4 socket, so it needs a motherboard with a matching socket. Sockets are not cross-compatible - a chip will not physically fit a board built for a different one. Every motherboard we list shows its socket on the Specifications tab, and it is worth checking the board maker’s support list for a BIOS update if the board is from an earlier generation than the chip.
How many cores and threads does it have?
8 cores and 16 threads. Cores do the work; threads are the number of jobs the chip can keep in flight at once. Games lean on a handful of fast cores, while rendering, compiling and video export scale with the total count.
What sort of cooler does it need?
It is rated at 105W TDP, which is the heat a cooler has to carry away under sustained load. Match or beat that figure with the cooler you choose, and check the What’s in the box list above - some processors ship with a cooler, some do not. Our PC Builder only offers coolers that fit the socket you have picked.
Do I need a separate graphics card with it?
Yes. This processor has no integrated graphics, so you will need a graphics card in the machine for it to output any picture at all. Budget for one in the build rather than treating it as a later upgrade.
Is it in stock, and when will it ship?

Can I collect instead of having it delivered?
Yes. Collection is from 11 Voortrekker Avenue, Edenvale, Gauteng, by arrangement - message us first so we can have the order picked and waiting. We are open 09:00 to 16:30, Monday to Friday.
What warranty does it carry, and how do I claim?
The warranty period for this product is listed at the end of the Specifications section above. Claims go through us, not the manufacturer - contact us with your order number and a description of the fault and we will handle it from there. Separately from any warranty, the Consumer Protection Act gives you six months from delivery to return goods that are defective, unsafe or not fit for their intended purpose.
What if I change my mind?
You have 14 days from delivery to change your mind - longer than the seven days the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act requires. The item needs to be unused and in its original packaging, and we pay the return shipping. Refunds go back to the payment method you used, within 30 days of the return reaching us.
