A value gaming CPU with a cooler

The i5-14400F is one of the most sensible mid-range gaming chips on LGA1700. Six Hyper-Threaded Performance-cores turbo to 4.7GHz for games, while four Efficient-cores take background tasks such as Discord, browsers and streaming software. The boxed Laminar RM1 cooler means there is nothing else to buy for the CPU, and it runs on affordable B760 and H610 boards. LGA1700 supports both DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s and DDR5 up to 4800 MT/s, so you can choose a DDR4 board to save money or reuse existing memory.

The "F" and the platform

"F" means no integrated graphics: a graphics card is required, and there is no display output or Quick Sync video encoding without it. If you need either, the standard Core i5-14400 is the version with UHD graphics. It is locked, so it is not for overclocking. The Laminar RM1 is rated for 65W; under sustained all-core loads the chip can reach 148W, so a tower cooler will run quieter and hold clocks better.
