Six Performance-cores at 4.4GHz — Intel's answer to the Ryzen 5 5600, and a 1080p gaming staple.
Quick Specs
- 6 cores / 12 threads, 2.5GHz base, up to 4.4GHz turbo
- 18MB Intel Smart Cache
- 65W base power, 117W max turbo
- LGA1700 socket, DDR5-4800 or DDR4-3200
- No integrated graphics — discrete card required
The budget gaming default
Six full Performance-cores — no efficiency cores in the mix, so every thread is a fast one — turbo to 4.4GHz with 18MB of cache behind them. That combination has made the 12400F one of the most-recommended budget gaming CPUs for years running. It keeps up with an RTX 4060 Ti or RX 7700 XT at 1080p without becoming the limit, runs at 65W, and sits on cheap B660 boards that will take DDR4 you may already own.
Where it runs out
Twelve threads is fine for gaming but tight if you want to stream, record or run heavy background work at the same time — the i7-12700 doubles the thread count for that. It's also locked, so there's no overclocking headroom. And the "F" means no display output without a graphics card. For a straightforward 1080p gaming build on a budget, none of that matters much.
