Where It Fits
The Ryzen 5 7400 is a 65W six-core for budget AM5 gaming builds paired with a mid-range graphics card, and for everyday workstations. Being on AM5 matters: the socket also takes faster Ryzen processors, so you can upgrade the CPU later without replacing the motherboard or DDR5 memory. It is unlocked, supports Precision Boost Overdrive, Curve Optimizer and AMD EXPO memory profiles, and comes with a Wraith Stealth cooler. Note that it launched in September 2025, so older AM5 motherboards may need a BIOS update to recognise it.
Know the Limits
Its 16MB of L3 cache is modest, and cache helps in many games, so if you are pairing a high-end graphics card, a step up the Ryzen range makes more sense. The built-in Radeon graphics has just two cores; it is there for display output and troubleshooting, not gaming, so budget for a graphics card. AMD officially rates memory at DDR5-5200 with two modules, and faster EXPO kits run as a memory overclock. The Wraith Stealth is a compact low-profile cooler; a tower cooler will run quieter under long, heavy loads.
