Buying into the platform

The 8400F is the entry ticket to AM5. Six Zen 4 cores with a high 4.2GHz base clock handle modern games and everyday work smoothly, and 65W keeps the bundled Wraith Stealth cooler and an ordinary power supply comfortable. The real value is the platform: an AM5 board and DDR5 memory bought now can later take a much faster Ryzen without replacing anything else. This is the MPK (multipack) version, which ships in AMD's bulk packaging rather than an individual retail box; the processor is the same as the boxed 8400F.

Know what the "F" and the cache mean

"F" means no integrated graphics, so a graphics card is mandatory and there is no display output without one. Like the rest of the 8000 series it carries 16MB of L3 and PCIe 4.0, versus 32MB and PCIe 5.0 on the Ryzen 5 7600 and 9600. In practice that costs a few frames rather than a whole performance tier, but if you want the bigger cache, compare the 7600 on price. The Wraith Stealth is fine at stock settings; buy a tower cooler if you plan to tune it or want lower noise.
