Buying the platform, not just the chip
The 8400F is the entry point to AM5, and that matters more than its raw speed. A B650 board and DDR5 bought today will take a Ryzen 7 9800X3D or whatever AMD ships next — you replace one part, not three. Meanwhile the 8400F itself is no slouch: a 4.2GHz base is unusually high for the money, six Zen 4 cores handle modern games without stutter, and 65W keeps it cool on a basic tower cooler.
Know what the "F" and the cache mean
"F" means no integrated graphics, so a discrete card is mandatory — there's no display output without one. And like the rest of the 8000 series it carries 16MB of L3 and runs PCIe 4.0 rather than the 32MB and PCIe 5.0 of the Ryzen 5 7600 and 9600. In practice that costs a handful of frames, not a tier of performance. If you want the extra cache and PCIe 5.0, the 7600 sits just above it and is worth comparing on price.
