The cheapest CPU worth putting in a gaming PC — four fast cores and nothing wasted.
Quick Specs
- 4 cores / 8 threads, 3.3GHz base, up to 4.3GHz turbo
- 12MB Intel Smart Cache
- 58W base power, 89W max turbo
- LGA1700 socket, DDR5-4800 or DDR4-3200
- No integrated graphics — discrete card required
Punching above its price
Four cores sounds thin until you see the clocks: 4.3GHz turbo on Intel's Golden Cove architecture makes the 12100F quicker in games than several older six-core chips. Pair it with an RTX 4060 or RX 7600 at 1080p and it holds its own comfortably. It runs at 58W, so a budget cooler and a modest power supply are fine, and LGA1700 boards can be had cheaply — this is how you get a real gaming PC built for the least money.
Know what four cores means
Games that expect six or more threads — big open worlds, heavy simulation, anything with lots of background streaming — will lean on this chip. And if you plan to stream or record while playing, four cores runs out fast; the i5-12400F is the honest step up. The "F" means no integrated graphics at all, so a discrete card isn't optional. Within those limits, it's outstanding value.
