Near-flagship speed for less

The 990 EVO Plus is Samsung's mid-range NVMe drive, and on paper its sequential speeds are close to the 990 PRO. It uses Host Memory Buffer, borrowing a small slice of system RAM instead of carrying its own DRAM chip. That keeps cost and power down, and Samsung claims 73% more performance per watt than the 990 EVO, which also makes it a good laptop upgrade. The dual-mode interface works over PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2, useful on newer laptops and boards that split lanes. Intelligent TurboWrite 2.0 keeps writes fast during typical copies.

EVO Plus or PRO?

Without DRAM, random performance is lower than the 990 PRO (850K vs 1,200K random read IOPS at 1TB) and sustained writes slow sooner once the cache fills. For a gaming or everyday boot drive that rarely matters. For heavy video work or large daily file transfers, the 990 PRO is the stronger choice. The bare 2.38mm drive has no heatsink, so in a PS5 or a hot desktop slot pair it with an M.2 cooler. At 1TB, a couple of large games fill it quickly. The 2TB model gives more room.
