A top-end Gen 4 boot and game drive

The 990 PRO sits near the practical limit of PCIe 4.0, and where it really pulls ahead of cheaper drives is random performance, the small reads that decide how fast Windows boots, apps open and games load. Samsung rates it 40% and 55% faster at random read and write than the 980 PRO, and it supports DirectStorage. It has a dedicated 1GB DRAM cache rather than relying on system memory, and a nickel-coated controller with a heat spreader label plus Dynamic Thermal Guard to manage heat. It suits gaming PCs, workstations and the PS5.

Heatsink, Gen 5, or a cheaper drive?

This is the bare version, only 2.3mm thick, for motherboards that have their own M.2 heatsink and for laptops. For a PS5 or a board without M.2 cooling, choose the 990 PRO with Heatsink. If your board has a PCIe 5.0 slot, the 9100 PRO is roughly twice as fast. On a PCIe 3.0 board it will work but is limited to around 3,500MB/s. For a secondary games drive, the 990 EVO Plus is cheaper and still quick.
