The upgrade that makes an old board feel new
If you have a B450 or B550 board running a Ryzen 5, the 5700X is the single best thing you can put in it. Sixteen threads absorb game-plus-stream, game-plus-Discord-plus-browser, and real creative work — Premiere exports, Blender renders, code builds — far better than any six-core. It keeps the full 32MB L3 and PCIe 4.0 for gaming performance, and holds all of that inside 65W, so your existing cooler is probably fine.
Two things to plan for
No cooler comes in the box, so you'll need one — though a mid-range tower easily handles 65W. And the 3.4GHz base is low; the chip relies on boost, which means good case airflow pays off here. For pure gaming on AM4 the 5800X3D is still the faster part, but it costs considerably more and is worse at everything that isn't a game. The 5700X is the all-rounder.

Before you buy
Which motherboards will this CPU fit?
It uses the AM4 socket, so it needs a motherboard with a matching socket. Sockets are not cross-compatible - a chip will not physically fit a board built for a different one. Every motherboard we list shows its socket on the Specifications tab, and it is worth checking the board maker’s support list for a BIOS update if the board is from an earlier generation than the chip.
How many cores and threads does it have?
8 cores and 16 threads. Cores do the work; threads are the number of jobs the chip can keep in flight at once. Games lean on a handful of fast cores, while rendering, compiling and video export scale with the total count.
What sort of cooler does it need?
It is rated at 65W TDP, which is the heat a cooler has to carry away under sustained load. Match or beat that figure with the cooler you choose, and check the What’s in the box list above - some processors ship with a cooler, some do not. Our PC Builder only offers coolers that fit the socket you have picked.
Do I need a separate graphics card with it?
Yes. This processor has no integrated graphics, so you will need a graphics card in the machine for it to output any picture at all. Budget for one in the build rather than treating it as a later upgrade.
Is it in stock, and when will it ship?
Yes - this one is in stock. Order before 12:00 on a working day and it ships the same day; after that it goes out the next working day. We are open 09:00 to 16:30, Monday to Friday, so an order placed over a weekend or a public holiday ships on the next working day.
What does delivery cost, and how long does it take?

It takes 1-3 working days to Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and areas within 100km of them, and 2-4 working days to areas more than 100km from a major centre, counted from the day the order is dispatched. Can I collect instead of having it delivered?
Yes. Collection is from 11 Voortrekker Avenue, Edenvale, Gauteng, by arrangement - message us first so we can have the order picked and waiting. We are open 09:00 to 16:30, Monday to Friday.
What warranty does it carry, and how do I claim?
The warranty period for this product is listed at the end of the Specifications section above. Claims go through us, not the manufacturer - contact us with your order number and a description of the fault and we will handle it from there. Separately from any warranty, the Consumer Protection Act gives you six months from delivery to return goods that are defective, unsafe or not fit for their intended purpose.
What if I change my mind?
You have 14 days from delivery to change your mind - longer than the seven days the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act requires. The item needs to be unused and in its original packaging, and we pay the return shipping. Refunds go back to the payment method you used, within 30 days of the return reaching us.
How can I pay?
