Built for phones as much as PCs
The Elite Magnet is aimed at people who shoot a lot of photos and video on a phone and want the storage to travel with it. The drive attaches magnetically, and a magnetic ring is included for phones that do not have built-in magnets. With up to 2000MB/s read and 1850MB/s write it also suits PC and Mac users moving large media files or project folders. Hiksemi lists support for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, and a Type-C to Type-C cable is in the box along with a quick start guide.
What to check first
The top speeds depend on the port you plug into. Many laptops and desktops only have 10Gbps USB ports, and phones vary widely, so expect lower real-world figures on those. If your devices only have USB-A ports you will need your own adapter, as only a Type-C to Type-C cable is included. The housing is plastic rather than aluminium, which keeps the weight to 56g but is less rugged than metal-bodied drives. Phone recording directly to the drive depends on your phone and camera app supporting external storage, so check that before relying on it for filming.
