The cheapest way to make an old PC feel new again.
The Hiksemi E100 City Series is a 1TB 2.5" drive on a SATA III 6Gb/s interface — it mounts in a standard drive bay and connects with a SATA data cable and a SATA power cable, exactly where a mechanical hard drive used to sit. If your machine still boots off a spinning disk, this is the single upgrade that changes how it feels to use.
Be clear about what it is, though. SATA is capped at around 550 MB/s by the interface itself, so this is the "rescue an older system or add bulk storage" part, not a performance step up from a drive you already run on NVMe. At 1TB it is the sensible size for an all-in-one drive: operating system, applications and a real game library on one disk.
Key Features
- 2.5" SATA III: up to 560 MB/s read and 500 MB/s write — effectively the ceiling of the SATA interface, and several times what a mechanical drive manages.
- Drop-in replacement: the standard 2.5" bay size, so it fits the drive bay of most desktops and laptops that take a 2.5" disk.
- 3D NAND flash: higher storage density with stable long-term behaviour.
- 480TB write endurance: rated at 480 TBW with an MTBF of 2 million hours.
- No moving parts: a vibration-resistant chip-based structure, which matters in a laptop or anything that gets carried around.
- Runs cool and light: 3.2W maximum power draw and a weight of 36.8g or less — kind to laptop battery life.
- TRIM supported: the drive keeps its own free space tidy so write speed holds up over time.
