What changed from the Platinum II
This is the generation where the Thor gets the ATX 3.1 badge, which is the part that matters on a 50-series card: the unit is validated for the power excursions those GPUs produce instead of relying on generous over-power headroom to ride them out. The connector layout is rebalanced too, from twelve SATA and eight PCIe down to seven SATA and four PCIe, which is a better match to a modern build where storage is mostly NVMe and the GPU takes a single 16-pin lead.
Quiet is the reason to pay this much
At 1000W and Platinum efficiency the unit sheds very little heat, and with the 0dB button engaged the fan does not turn at all until the system crosses a set load. Cybenetics puts it in the A++ band, which is as quiet as the certification goes. If acoustics are not your priority the Strix 1000W Platinum delivers the same wattage and rating for considerably less money. Watch the 190mm depth in a mid-tower.
