Z890 overclocking and lanes, trimmed to a price that makes sense
Quick Specs
- Intel Z890 chipset, Socket LGA1851 for Core Ultra Series 2 processors
- ATX form factor with four DDR5 DIMM slots and full XMP overclocking
- PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot plus multiple M.2 sockets including PCIe 5.0
- Thunderbolt 4 Type-C connectivity
- Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5 Gb Ethernet onboard
The Z890 most people should actually buy
The Z890-H keeps the parts of the E-model that change how the machine behaves, and drops the parts that mostly change how it looks. You still get unlocked CPU multiplier support, four DIMM slots with proper memory tuning, a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot, PCIe 5.0 M.2 storage, Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 7. What you give up is some of the heavier heatsink hardware and a portion of the rear I/O count. For a Core Ultra 7 or 9 build that will run a fast DDR5 kit and two or three NVMe drives, this is the sensible landing point in the ASUS Intel range.
Honest limitations
The VRM is capable but not the equal of the Z890-E, so if you plan a sustained heavy all-core overclock on a Core Ultra 9 with an ambitious voltage curve, the bigger board has more margin. Networking is 2.5 Gb rather than the faster wired option on higher tiers. Fewer rear USB ports means a hub is more likely if you run a lot of peripherals, and the expansion slot count is thinner once M.2 sockets are populated. Buyers who only ever run a locked CPU should look hard at B860 instead, which costs less and games identically.
