Intel's Z890 platform with ROG's best memory tuning behind it
Quick Specs
- Intel Z890 chipset on LGA1851 for Core Ultra Series 2 processors
- Four DDR5 DIMM slots tuned for very high overclocked frequencies
- ATX form factor with full ROG armour and Q-Code diagnostics
- PCIe 5.0 graphics and multiple PCIe 5.0 M.2 sockets
- Dual Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 Type-C, 5GbE and Wi-Fi 7
The enthusiast's Z890 choice
Maximus Hero is the board most serious Intel builders end up on. Core Ultra 200S chips are noticeably sensitive to memory speed and interconnect tuning, and ROG's BIOS is the most complete toolkit available for extracting that performance — clear submenus, sane defaults, per-core controls and a Q-Code readout when a setting goes too far. Around that sits everything a high-end build wants: PCIe 5.0 for GPU and storage, dual USB4 for docks and fast enclosures, 5GbE, Wi-Fi 7 and SupremeFX audio good enough that most people skip the external DAC.
Read this before you spend the money
If you install a Core Ultra 7 and never open the BIOS, this board's advantage over a Prime Z890 is largely cosmetic and connective, not a frame-rate win. It is also a big spend on a platform whose CPU upgrade path is shorter than AM5's, so factor that into a five-year plan. There is no OLED panel and networking stops at 5GbE — a 10-gig home network needs the Extreme or an add-in card. Small-form-factor builders and anyone on a strict budget should look at the ROG Strix Z890 range instead.
