Full-size AM5 with wireless built in, at a price that still leaves room for the GPU
Quick Specs
- AMD B840 chipset on Socket AM5 for Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 series processors
- Four DDR5 DIMM slots, dual channel, up to 128GB with AMD EXPO support
- PCIe 4.0 x16 graphics slot on a full ATX layout
- Two M.2 sockets for NVMe storage plus four SATA 6Gb/s ports
- Onboard Wi-Fi with Bluetooth, 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet and rear USB-C
Space, airflow and the connectivity you use
Going full ATX buys you three things that matter in a real build: more room around the socket for a large air cooler, better spacing between the graphics card and the lower slots, and enough mounting points that the board does not flex when you seat a heavy GPU. Add Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 2.5G LAN in the box and this becomes a straightforward foundation for a Ryzen 7 7700 or 9700X gaming machine. For local buyers, the four DDR5 slots also mean you can buy 32GB now and add more when memory pricing swings favourably.
The compromises to weigh
B840 is a mainstream chipset and it sits below B850 on connectivity. You do not get a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot and Gen5 storage support is limited compared with the higher tiers, so if you have your eye on a Gen5 NVMe drive, look at B850 or X870. CPU overclocking support on B840 is restricted relative to B650 and B850, which makes this a board for running chips at stock or with Precision Boost Overdrive rather than manual tuning. There is no post-code display and audio is solid mainstream rather than premium.
