A starter CPU for a budget gaming build
The Ryzen 3 4100 is for tight budgets where most of the money needs to go to the graphics card. Four Zen 2 cores with simultaneous multithreading handle esports titles, schoolwork, streaming video and office use comfortably, and the bundled Wraith Stealth cooler means there is nothing else to buy for the CPU. At 65W it runs happily on entry-level A520 and B450 boards and a modest power supply, and AM4 boards and DDR4 memory are widely available and affordable, including on the second-hand market.
Two things to know first
There are no integrated graphics. A discrete graphics card is required, or the PC will not display anything. If you need to run without a card for now, look at an AMD G-series APU instead. Second, it uses PCIe 3.0 and a smaller cache than Zen 3 parts, so modern games that lean on the CPU will feel it, and fast GPUs will be held back. If you can stretch the budget, a six-core Ryzen 5 5500 or 5600 is a meaningfully stronger long-term gaming chip on the same board.
