Intel's current enthusiast platform, done sensibly rather than extravagantly

- ATX form factor with unlocked CPU and memory overclocking
A clean start on LGA1851
The TUF Gaming Z890-Plus WiFi is the board to pair with a Core Ultra 7 or Ultra 9 when you want the newest Intel platform without ROG pricing. Z890 brings a much wider USB and PCIe budget than the old Z790, so you can run a PCIe 5.0 graphics card, a PCIe 5.0 boot drive and still have lanes left for capture cards or fast networking. Thunderbolt 4 on the rear panel is genuinely useful for external storage and docks, and Wi-Fi 7 is worth having as South African fibre routers catch up. It is a long-life foundation.
Where it stops short
You are still paying for a mid-tier board, so expect a competent Realtek audio codec rather than an ESS DAC, 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet rather than 10 Gigabit, and no on-board POST display, power button or diagnostic LED array beyond the basic Q-LEDs. The heatsinks handle a stock Ultra 9 comfortably but extreme sustained all-core overclocking is better served further up the range. Core Ultra Series 2 also trades some gaming performance for efficiency compared to the last generation, so if raw frames per rand is your only metric, an AM5 X3D build may suit you better.
FEATURES:
- Digital VRM with alloy chokes and enlarged heatsinks sized for Core Ultra 9 processors
- PCIe Slot Q-Release Slim and M.2 Q-Latch and Q-Slide for tool-free installs
- AI Overclocking, AI Cooling II and full Fan Xpert control on every header
- BIOS FlashBack and Q-LED diagnostic indicators
- TUF component certification with pre-mounted rear I/O shield
