Simple capture for consoles and laptops
Game Capture 4K S is Elgato's entry point to 4K capture. It's UVC, so it works plug and play over USB-C with Windows, Mac and USB-C iPads, and with apps like OBS and Discord as well as Elgato Studio. It records 4K at 60fps, or 1080p at up to 120fps, and passes your game through to your TV or monitor at up to 4K60 HDR10 or 1080p240 with VRR, so you play on the big screen with no lag while the PC records. A 3.5mm analogue input lets you mix in chat or commentary audio. It's well suited to Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series S setups.
Where the 4K X makes more sense
The 4K S uses HDMI 2.0, so passthrough tops out at 4K60 and 1440p120. If you have a 4K 120Hz or 144Hz TV and a PS5 or Xbox Series X, the HDMI 2.1 Game Capture 4K X keeps those modes. HDR capture on the 4K S is limited to 1080p60 and only on Windows. It needs a USB 3.0 Type-C port and, on Windows, Windows 11 with an 8th-gen Core i5 or Ryzen and a GTX 10-series class GPU. It only captures unencrypted HDMI, so disable HDCP on PlayStation first.
