The cheapest way to make an old laptop or desktop feel new again
The Crucial BX500 is a 2.5" SATA drive built to replace a mechanical hard disk in a desktop or a notebook. It boots faster, opens files faster and stops the drive being the thing you wait for. If your machine still has a spinning disk, this is the single upgrade that changes how it feels to use.
Key Features
- 2.5" SATA form factor: 7mm high, fits a standard drive bay or notebook caddy and connects with a SATA data cable plus SATA power.
- SATA III 6Gb/s interface: read speeds up to 550MB/s and write speeds up to 500MB/s, which is the practical ceiling of the SATA interface itself.
- Micron 3D NAND: Crucial is Micron's consumer brand, so the flash and the drive come from the same house.
- SLC write acceleration: like all consumer SSDs, the drive writes fastest into its cache and settles to a lower sustained rate on very large continuous transfers.
- 120TB endurance: rated for 120 terabytes written over the life of the drive.
- Maintenance features: thermal monitoring, TRIM support, SMART reporting and error correction code (ECC).
- Acronis True Image for Crucial: cloning software so you can move an existing Windows install across instead of reinstalling.

What's in the Box
- 1 x Crucial BX500 500GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5" SSD
- 1 x Acronis True Image for Crucial (cloning software licence)
Note that 500GB is enough for Windows, your applications and a couple of games, but not for a large library — plan a second drive if you install a lot. Formatted capacity works out to roughly 466GB usable, which is normal. Covered by a 3 year warranty. Best suited to reviving an older SATA machine or adding bulk storage next to an existing NVMe drive; it will not be faster than an NVMe drive you already have.
