An affordable ticket onto AM5, with room for a real graphics card
Quick Specs
- AMD A620 chipset on Socket AM5 for Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 series processors
- Four DDR5 DIMM slots with AMD EXPO memory profile support
- PCIe 4.0 x16 graphics slot plus M.2 NVMe storage
- 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet with HDMI and DisplayPort output
- Micro-ATX form factor with heatsinked power stage
The entry point that does not feel like a compromise
A620 is AMD's budget AM5 chipset, and the A620AM Pro RS is the version of it worth buying. You get four DDR5 slots rather than two, a proper 2.5 Gigabit network port and a power stage with real heatsinks, which is more than most boards at this price bother with. Paired with a Ryzen 5 7600 or a Ryzen 7 7700, it makes a strong 1080p and 1440p gaming machine. Because it is AM5, the CPU socket has years of upgrade path left, so the same board can carry a much faster chip later.
The trade-offs you are accepting
A620 does not support CPU overclocking and its memory support is more conservative than B650 or B850, so very fast EXPO kits may need to run a notch slower. The graphics slot is PCIe 4.0 rather than 5.0, and there is no on-board Wi-Fi, so plan on cabled internet or a USB adapter. Storage provision is modest compared with a B-series board, and the VRM, while decently cooled, is not intended for a Ryzen 9 running flat out. Enthusiasts tuning memory or fitting a 16-core chip should step up to B850.
