Flagship Gen 5 speed with room to work

The 2TB 9100 PRO pairs Samsung's PCIe 5.0 controller with a 2GB DRAM cache and a slightly higher write rating than the 1TB model (13,400MB/s vs 13,300MB/s). That makes it a strong primary drive for a new AM5 or Intel build where you want the OS, creative apps, project files and games on one very fast device. Endurance doubles to 1,200 TBW, which suits heavy video editing and large daily writes, and Samsung quotes improved power efficiency and thermal control over its previous generation.

Do you need Gen 5?

Its speed only shows in a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot. On a Gen 4 board it runs at Gen 4 rates, and the 990 PRO 2TB would be the better buy. For gaming alone the real-world difference over a good Gen 4 drive is small. The gains are in big file copies, editing and scratch-disk work. This is the bare drive with no heatsink, and Gen 5 SSDs run warm, so fit it under your motherboard's M.2 cooler.
