WD Red Pro is the step up from Red Plus for business and power-user NAS. It is rated for a 550TB/year workload, about three times the Red Plus, and is designed for tower and rack-mount systems with any number of bays. NASware firmware, Time-Limited Error Recovery (TLER) and Rotational Vibration Safeguards keep a RAID array running smoothly under heavy multi-user load, while OptiNAND and ArmorCache add flash-assisted metadata handling and write-cache protection. At 16TB with a 512MB cache and 259MB/s, it suits virtualisation, video editing shares and large backup targets.
What to weigh up
It is a 7200 RPM enterprise-class mechanism, so it is louder and warmer than a 5400 RPM drive. Plan for good NAS cooling and keep the unit out of living spaces. For a 2- to 4-bay home NAS with light use, WD Red Plus costs less per terabyte and is quieter. In return, Red Pro gives you a 2.5 million hour MTBF rating and a 5 year warranty instead of 3. Screws and cables are not included.
