Rugged storage for USB-C laptops and tablets
The Rugged USB-C is LaCie's field drive for people whose computers have moved to USB-C. It connects directly to a MacBook, a USB4 or Thunderbolt 3/4 laptop, or a USB-C iPad or iPhone, and draws power from the port. LaCie rates it for drops of up to 1.2m (when not operating), rain, and a car of about 1,000kg driving over it, so it's happy in a camera bag or on a building site. At 4TB it holds a lot of RAW photos or 4K footage, and LaCie Toolkit software adds backup options on Mac and Windows.
Size, speed and alternatives
The 4TB and 5TB models are 26mm thick and weigh 400g, noticeably chunkier than the 18.7mm 1TB and 2TB versions. The USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface runs at up to 5Gb/s, but a hard drive sits inside, so expect portable HDD speeds rather than SSD speeds; edit heavy video from an SSD instead. If your machine only has USB-A ports, the LaCie Rugged Mini with its USB 3.0 cable is the better match. If you want a little more room in the same body, the 5TB model costs a bit more.

- USB-C connector, compatible with USB4, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 3/4 ports
