The capacity most DDR4 builds should land on

If you are specifying memory for a DDR4 gaming machine that also does real work, this is the configuration to aim for. Thirty-two gigabytes across two 16GB modules gives you dual channel bandwidth plus enough headroom to stream while you play, keep a heavy browser session open, edit photos or video between sessions, and run the odd virtual machine without the system swapping. The 3600MHz rating is the practical performance target on Ryzen 3000 and 5000 boards thanks to the 1:1 fabric ratio, and it slots into Intel LGA1200 and DDR4 LGA1700 systems just as happily. Two 16GB DIMMs are dual rank, which is marginally quicker than four smaller sticks at the same timings.

Honest limits

This kit will not make a DDR4 platform behave like DDR5. If you are choosing a new build from scratch today, an AM5 or LGA1851 system with DDR5-6000 has more bandwidth and a longer upgrade runway; DDR4 makes sense when you already own a compatible board and CPU. Within DDR4, going beyond 3600MHz gives diminishing returns on most platforms and can force a fabric ratio that costs more latency than the extra frequency gains. And if you only game, 32GB is the sensible ceiling — 64GB will not add frames. DDR4 modules will not fit DDR5 boards; the notch differs. Check your board's QVL first.
