Made for DVRs and NVRs
Surveillance recorders write constantly, many video streams at once, and rarely read back. WD Purple is built for that pattern. WD AllFrame firmware is optimised for write-intensive, low bit-rate, high stream-count workloads to help reduce dropped frames, and the drive supports up to 64 HD cameras and systems with up to 16 bays. It uses CMR recording and is rated for a 180TB/year workload. At 6TB it suits a home or small-business CCTV recorder keeping several weeks of footage, depending on camera count and resolution.
Not a desktop drive
WD Purple's firmware favours steady recording over quick random access, so it is a poor choice as a PC games or boot drive and isn't designed for NAS file serving either (use WD Red for that). At 5400 RPM it runs cooler and quieter than 7200 RPM drives, which suits recorders tucked into cabinets. Check your DVR or NVR's maximum supported drive size before buying. Screws and cables are not included.
