Built for multi-bay NAS that runs all day
IronWolf Pro is Seagate's step up from the standard IronWolf, aimed at business and creative NAS units that run 24x7 with several people using them at once. It uses conventional magnetic recording (CMR), so RAID rebuilds and heavy random writes don't slow to a crawl the way SMR drives can. Rotational vibration sensors keep throughput steady when it sits next to other spinning drives, and Seagate doesn't limit the number of bays it's rated for. On compatible NAS systems, IronWolf Health Management reports drive condition through the NAS software so you get warning before a failure.
Is 12TB the right size for you?
12TB suits a four-bay NAS where you want about 36TB usable in RAID 5 without paying for the largest drives. This is a 7200 RPM drive, so expect more noise and heat than a 5400 RPM-class drive: 20 dBA at idle and 26 dBA seeking, which you'll hear in a quiet study. If your NAS is a home media box with one or two users, the cheaper standard IronWolf is enough. If you need more space per bay, the 20TB and 24TB IronWolf Pro models also move up to 285MB/s sustained.
