Simple extra storage for a laptop
The Expansion portable is Seagate's no-frills external drive: plug it into a USB port, wait for it to appear, then drag and drop files across. There's no power adapter, since it draws power over the USB cable, and nothing to install on Windows or macOS. 1TB is enough for a full photo library, a few hundred hours of downloaded video or a backup of a typical laptop. It's thin and light enough to live in a laptop bag, and Seagate's Rescue Data Recovery Services are included in case the drive is ever damaged.
What to consider before buying
This is a spinning hard drive, so treat it gently while it's running, and expect it to be much slower than a portable SSD for large transfers or editing straight off the drive. It uses a USB 3.0 Micro-B style cable rather than USB-C, so newer USB-C-only laptops will need an adapter. Mac users wanting Time Machine will have to reformat it first. If you need more room, the 2TB model is the same size, while the 4TB and 5TB versions are thicker at 20.9mm. There's no bundled backup software with this model.
FEATURES:
- Plug-and-play setup with drag-and-drop file saving
- Single USB cable for power and data, no adapter needed
- USB 3.0 transfer speeds, backward compatible with USB 2.0
- Recognised automatically by Windows and macOS
- Rescue Data Recovery Services included (not available in all countries)
