Rugged storage for USB-C laptops and tablets
The Rugged USB-C is LaCie's orange field drive for people whose laptops and tablets only have USB-C ports. It plugs straight into a MacBook, a USB4 or Thunderbolt 3/4 laptop or a USB-C iPad without adapters, and runs off bus power. LaCie rates it for drops of up to 1.2m (when not operating), rain, and being driven over by a car of about 1,000kg, so it copes with camera bags, site visits and travel. LaCie Toolkit software adds backup options, and the drive comes pre-formatted to work with Mac and Windows.
What you're getting at 2TB
The 1TB and 2TB versions are the slim ones at 18.7mm thick; the 4TB and 5TB are 26mm. The interface is USB 3.2 Gen 1 at 5Gb/s, but there's a spinning hard drive inside, so real-world speed is that of a portable HDD, not an SSD. For editing 4K footage directly from the drive, a portable SSD is the better tool. If your computer only has USB-A ports, the LaCie Rugged Mini comes with a USB 3.0 cable instead. Three years of Rescue Data Recovery Services are included, which is reassuring for client work.
