Plain, cheap extra storage
The Seagate Basic does exactly what the name suggests. Plug it into a Windows PC or laptop, it appears as a drive, and you drag and drop files onto it. There's no software to install and no power adapter, since it runs from the USB port. 1TB is plenty for documents, school projects, a photo library or moving files between home and work, and the compact case slips into a laptop bag. Over a USB 3.0 port it runs at full SuperSpeed USB rates, and it still works on older USB 2.0 ports at slower speeds.
What it doesn't do
This drive is set up for Windows. Mac users can use it, but it has to be reformatted first, which wipes it. There's no backup software, password protection or bundled data recovery service, so if you want those, look at the Seagate One Touch range, or the Expansion portable, which includes Rescue Data Recovery. As a mechanical hard drive, it's slower than a portable SSD and shouldn't be bumped while running. The included cable is USB 3.0, so a USB-C-only laptop needs an adapter. For larger backups, the 2TB and higher capacities make more sense.
