A field drive for big shoots
The 4TB Rugged Mini is aimed at photographers and videographers who come back from a day's shooting with hundreds of gigabytes of RAW files or 4K clips. It has LaCie's protective rubber sleeve and a rugged design by Neil Poulton, and LaCie rates it as drop, shock, rain and pressure resistant. In LaCie's test, a car of about 1,000kg drove over it and it kept working, with only cosmetic damage. It's powered over the USB cable, so there's no adapter to carry, and it works with both Mac and Windows.
Trade-offs at 4TB
To fit 4TB, this version is thicker and heavier than the 2TB model: 26mm and 400g versus 19mm and 300g. It's still a mechanical hard drive, so it's tougher than an unprotected portable but slower than a portable SSD, and it shouldn't be jolted mid-transfer. It comes with a USB 3.0 cable for USB-A ports. If your laptop only has USB-C, the LaCie Rugged USB-C, which ships with a native USB-C cable, will be less hassle. Mac users wanting Time Machine will need to reformat the drive first.
