Check the 15mm height first
This drive is 15mm thick, not the 7mm or 9.5mm that almost every laptop uses, so it will not fit most notebooks. Where it does fit is in 2.5" USB enclosures, some all-in-one PCs, small-form-factor builds and drive bays designed for 15mm drives. Seagate designed the 3TB to 5TB models with low startup current, so they spin up reliably in bus-powered external enclosures. It's a good way to build a large portable backup drive or add bulk storage to a compact system that can't take a 3.5" drive.
Speed and SMR trade-offs
At 5400 RPM and up to 140MB/s, this is a storage drive, not a boot drive. Windows and apps will feel much quicker on an SSD. It uses shingled magnetic recording (SMR), which is fine for photos, video archives and game libraries, but sustained heavy writes can slow down, and it isn't suited to NAS or RAID use, where IronWolf is the right choice. If you need a slim drive for a laptop, the 7mm BarraCuda models top out at 2TB. If you want 5TB ready to plug in, a Seagate portable drive may be simpler.
