Desk storage built around a NAS-grade drive
The d2 Professional is LaCie's long-running desktop drive for photographers, video editors and anyone who needs a big, reliable working drive next to the computer. Instead of a basic desktop disk, it uses a Seagate IronWolf Pro, the same enterprise-class drive line sold for business NAS units. The enclosure is a single-piece aluminium unibody that reduces noise and vibration, with a quiet fan to keep temperatures down during long transfers. LaCie rates it at up to 290MB/s over USB-C, and LaCie Toolkit handles scheduled backups and folder sync on Mac and Windows.
Who it suits, and who should skip it
Because it needs mains power from the included adapter, this is a desk drive, not something to carry around; for travel, look at the LaCie Rugged range. It connects to USB-C, USB4 and Thunderbolt 3/4 ports, and works with USB-C iPads too. 16TB is a good size for a growing photo archive or a few years of 4K projects, and the 5 year warranty is longer than most external drives get. If you need RAID protection or more than one drive's worth of speed, a two-bay unit such as the LaCie 2big Dock is the next step up.
