Fast storage without the flagship price
The WD Blue SN5100 is a value PCIe 4.0 drive that gets close to top Gen 4 sequential speeds, at up to 7,100MB/s read and 6,700MB/s write. Random performance of up to 1,000K read and 1,300K write IOPS keeps boot times and game loading quick, and nCache 4.0 helps large file and project-folder copies finish faster. At 1TB it makes a sensible boot drive for a new build or an upgrade for a laptop with an M.2 2280 slot. It also works in PCIe 3.0 slots at Gen 3 speeds.
Who should spend more
Sandisk does not list a DRAM cache for this drive, and its 600 TBW rating is standard for the class. Heavy video editors or anyone writing large amounts of data daily should look at a DRAM-equipped drive such as the Samsung 990 PRO. There is no heatsink, so in a PS5 or a hot desktop slot use an M.2 cooler. Note that the SN5100 is now also sold under the Sandisk Optimus 5100 name. It is the same drive line, so don't be surprised by either label.
