The Rugged Mini is LaCie's classic field drive, with a protective rubber sleeve and a rugged design by Neil Poulton. It's built for photographers, videographers, students and anyone whose drive lives in a backpack rather than on a desk. LaCie rates it as drop, shock, rain and pressure resistant, and in its own test a car of about 1,000kg drove over the drive, leaving it scuffed but working. It's bus powered over USB, so one cable handles both power and data, and it works with both Mac and Windows.
Rugged Mini or Rugged USB-C?
The Rugged Mini ships with a USB 3.0 cable for standard USB-A ports, which suits most Windows laptops and older Macs. If your laptop only has USB-C ports, the LaCie Rugged USB-C is the simpler choice, since it comes with a native USB-C cable. Remember this is still a spinning hard drive: rugged means it survives knocks in a bag, but it's slower than a portable SSD and happiest when it's not jolted mid-transfer. The 2TB model is slimmer (19mm) and lighter (300g) than the 4TB, which is 26mm thick and 400g.
