Cheap capacity for laptops and small systems
The 2.5" BarraCuda is a straightforward way to add a terabyte to a laptop, a mini PC or a games console that takes a 2.5" SATA drive. At 7mm thick it fits slim notebooks that can't take a 9.5mm or 15mm drive, and at 90g it adds almost nothing to the weight. Power draw is low (about 1.6W reading and 0.45W idle), which helps battery life. Seagate's Multi-Tier Caching Technology uses the drive's cache layers to smooth out bursts of writes, and it's also a sensible drive for a home-built USB enclosure.
Know what you're buying
This is a 5400 RPM drive using shingled magnetic recording (SMR), which is fine for storing photos, documents and a game library, but it's much slower than any SSD for booting Windows or loading apps. If it's going to be your only drive, a SATA SSD will feel far quicker. SMR also makes it a poor choice for a NAS or RAID array, where rebuilds can be slow; buy IronWolf for that. If you need more space in the same 2.5" size, the 15mm BarraCuda goes up to 5TB, but check your laptop takes 15mm drives first. Most don't.
FEATURES:
- Slim 7mm form factor for thin laptops and small systems
- Multi-Tier Caching Technology for faster write handling
- Up to 140MB/s data rate
- Low power draw and QuietStep ramp load for quiet operation
- Halogen-free and RoHS compliant
