Stylish storage with a lock on it
The Mobile Drive Secure is LaCie's design-led portable drive, with an industrial design by Neil Poulton and precision laser etching on a case made with recycled aluminium and plastic. The Secure version adds built-in password protection, so files stay private if the drive is lost or borrowed. It connects over USB-C to Macs, Windows laptops, USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 ports, and to USB-C iPads and iPhones, drawing power from the port. LaCie Toolkit handles one-click and scheduled backups and folder sync, and it works with macOS and Windows out of the box.
Realistic expectations
Even on a Thunderbolt 4 port, the hard drive inside sets the pace: LaCie rates it at up to 130MB/s, which is fine for backups and document or photo storage but far slower than a portable SSD for video editing. If you don't need a password, the standard LaCie Mobile Drive is the simpler option, and if your work happens outdoors, the LaCie Rugged USB-C is tougher. Keep your password safe, as password protection is only useful if you can't easily bypass it. The 4TB version offers double the space in the same design.
