VA gives you black that is genuinely black rather than the dark grey an IPS panel produces, which matters enormously in horror games, space sims and anything watched in a dark room. The costs are equally real: colour shifts more when you move off-centre, and VA is slower than IPS on dark-to-dark transitions, so you may see some smearing in fast dark scenes despite the 1ms rating. On a 1500R curve you sit centred anyway, which takes most of the sting out of the viewing angle problem.

Why 1500R rather than a gentler curve

The number is the radius of the circle the panel is a slice of, so 1500R means a 1.5 metre radius and a fairly aggressive bend. Across 34 inches of ultrawide that is what keeps the far edges roughly equidistant from your eyes at typical desk distance. It suits a single seated user very well and suits a screen two people share very badly. It also makes straight lines look slightly bowed for the first week, which is an adjustment rather than a defect, and it makes the monitor awkward to wall-mount flush.

FEATURES:

VA panel with markedly deeper blacks than IPS at this price

3440 x 1440 ultrawide, no centre bezel across two work areas

180Hz refresh rate

1ms response time

1500R curvature for consistent edge-to-eye distance

SPECIFICATIONS:

Model: Xiaomi Gaming Monitor G34WQi

Screen size: 34 inch

Panel: VA

Resolution: 3440 x 1440

Aspect ratio: 21:9 ultrawide

Refresh rate: 180Hz

Response time: 1ms

Curvature: 1500R

Warranty: 2 year

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

Xiaomi G34WQi monitor

Stand base and bracket

Power adapter

Documentation

Cables: Xiaomi does not itemise the cable bundle for this model, so ask us before ordering if you need a specific cable included

Why Xiaomi?

Xiaomi got to a 180Hz 1440p ultrawide at under R7 000 by choosing a VA panel and a plain chassis, and being upfront about both.
