It is 40 inches diagonally at 3440 x 1440, which spreads the same pixel count over a much larger area than a 34-inch ultrawide and lands around 93 pixels per inch. Text is not as crisp as a 34-inch UWQHD panel and you will want to sit a little further back, but the sheer footprint is the appeal: three usable windows across, or a game that fills your peripheral vision without a curve distorting straight lines. The flat panel is deliberate and suits mixed work and play better than a tight curve does.

The USB-C port earns its place

One USB-C cable carries video, the USB hub and 65 watts of charging, so a laptop docks with a single connection and stays topped up while it drives the screen. That is genuinely useful if you work off a notebook and game off a desktop; it is worth nothing at all if you only ever plug in a tower, in which case ignore it and use DisplayPort. On the gaming side, 155Hz needs DisplayPort as well: the HDMI inputs cap at 3440 x 1440 and 100Hz. DisplayHDR 400 at 400 nits is entry-level HDR with no local dimming, so expect a brighter picture rather than a different one.

FEATURES:

40-inch flat IPS panel at 3440 x 1440 and 155Hz

USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode and 65W power delivery for single-cable laptop docking

Built-in USB hub: 2x USB 2.0 Type-A with Type-B upstream

VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification at 400 nits

AMD FreeSync Premium variable refresh

SPECIFICATIONS:

Model: MSI MAG401QR

Panel size: 40 inch (101.6 cm)

Panel type: IPS, flat

Resolution: 3440 x 1440 (UWQHD), 21:9

Refresh rate: 155Hz (DisplayPort), 100Hz (HDMI)

Response time: 1ms (MPRT)

Brightness: 400 nits (typical), 400 nits HDR peak

Contrast ratio: 1000:1

Colour gamut: 90% Adobe RGB, 94% DCI-P3, 118% sRGB

HDR: VESA DisplayHDR 400

Adaptive sync: AMD FreeSync Premium

Inputs: 1x DisplayPort, 2x HDMI, 1x USB-C (DP Alt Mode, 65W PD)

USB hub: 2x USB 2.0 Type-A, 1x USB 2.0 Type-B upstream

Audio: 1x headphone out

Adjustment: tilt -5° to 20°

Security: Kensington lock slot

VESA: 100 x 100mm

Warranty: 3 Year

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

MSI MAG401QR monitor with stand

Power cable

Quick start guide

MSI does not publish a full accessory list for this model, so the bundled cables may vary by region

Why MSI?

Very few 40-inch ultrawides include USB-C power delivery, and MSI put it here rather than reserving it for a business line.
