The VRM is far stronger than the price suggests, so a Ryzen 7 9700X or even a 9950X runs without thermal drama, and the AM5 socket means you can drop in a newer Ryzen down the line instead of replacing the whole platform. For South African builders that longevity matters, because a board upgrade here means importing all over again. Four DDR5 slots, generous rear I/O and onboard Wi-Fi 6E make it an easy one-and-done choice.

Where it stops short

B650 is not X670E. The primary graphics slot runs PCIe 4.0 rather than 5.0, which is a non-issue for every current GPU but worth knowing if you plan to keep this board for many years. You get fewer total PCIe lanes and fewer USB ports than the X670E and X870E boards, and there is no rear USB4. There is no post-code display on some revisions, only EZ Debug LEDs, which makes troubleshooting slightly coarser. If you need multiple high-bandwidth add-in cards, four or more NVMe drives, or Thunderbolt-class connectivity, look at an X870E Tomahawk instead.

FEATURES:

Extended heatsink design with MOSFET thermal pads for sustained load

PCIe 5.0 ready M.2 storage with M.2 Shield Frozr cooling

Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth onboard, no adapter needed

2.5G LAN with MSI LAN Manager traffic prioritisation

Flash BIOS Button for updating without a CPU installed

SPECIFICATIONS:

Model: MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi

Chipset: AMD B650

Socket: AMD AM5

Form Factor: ATX

Memory: DDR5, 4x DIMM slots, up to 256GB, high-speed kits supported via AMD EXPO

Expansion Slots: 1x PCIe x16 primary slot plus additional PCIe x16 and x1 slots

Storage: 3x M.2 slots including PCIe 5.0 capable, 6x SATA 6Gb/s ports

Networking: 2.5 Gigabit LAN, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth

Audio: Realtek 7.1-channel HD Audio with audio boost circuitry

Rear I/O highlights: HDMI and DisplayPort, USB Type-C, Wi-Fi antenna connectors, Flash BIOS Button, Clear CMOS

USB: USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C and Type-A, USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 2.0 ports plus internal headers

Warranty: 3 Year

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi motherboard

Wi-Fi antenna

SATA 6Gb/s cables

M.2 mounting screws and standoffs

Quick installation guide and driver information

Why MSI?

The MAG Tomahawk name has earned its reputation by delivering enthusiast-grade power delivery at a mainstream price, generation after generation.
