You get the full ATX layout, four DDR5 slots and a proper VRM heatsink for less than a mid-range B650 board typically costs, which leaves more of the budget where it belongs, on the GPU. It suits a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 gaming build, or an office and content machine that needs plenty of drives and cards. AM5 also means the CPU socket has years of support left, so this is a build you can refresh rather than replace.

Know what B840 leaves out

B840 is the most basic 800-series chipset. It does not offer the PCIe 5.0 lanes that B850 and X870 boards provide for graphics or storage, and the chipset's overall lane count and USB provisioning are more modest. Memory overclocking headroom is also more limited than on the higher tiers. If you are buying a Gen5 NVMe drive, planning several high-speed peripherals, or intending to push an expensive memory kit hard, spend the extra on a B850. For a straightforward gaming build at stock settings, none of that will bother you.

FEATURES:

Extended VRM heatsink design for stable power delivery under load

Steel Armor reinforcement on the primary PCIe x16 slot

M.2 Shield Frozr heatsink on the primary NVMe slot

Integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with external antenna

EZ DEBUG LED and pre-mounted rear I/O shield

SPECIFICATIONS:

Model: MSI B840 Gaming Plus WiFi

Chipset: AMD B840

Socket: AMD Socket AM5

Form Factor: ATX

Memory: 4 x DDR5 DIMM, dual channel, up to 256GB, AMD EXPO overclocking profiles

Expansion Slots: 1 x reinforced PCIe x16 slot plus additional PCIe expansion slots

Storage: 2 x M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs, 4 x SATA 6Gb/s ports

Networking: Wired LAN with integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Audio: 7.1-channel HD audio codec

Rear I/O: HDMI, DisplayPort, LAN, Wi-Fi antenna connectors, audio jacks

USB: USB 3.2 Type-C and Type-A rear ports with front-panel USB headers

Warranty: 3 Year

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

MSI B840 Gaming Plus WiFi motherboard

SATA data cables

Wi-Fi antenna

M.2 mounting screws

Quick start guide and driver media

Why MSI?

MSI prices its Gaming Plus boards to be the sensible middle of the range rather than the cheapest thing on the shelf, and the build quality reflects that.
