It has LaCie's protective rubber sleeve and a rugged design by Neil Poulton, and LaCie rates it as drop, shock, rain and pressure resistant. In LaCie's test, a car of about 1,000kg drove over it and it kept working, with only cosmetic damage. It's powered over the USB cable, so there's no adapter to carry, and it works with both Mac and Windows.

Trade-offs at 4TB

To fit 4TB, this version is thicker and heavier than the 2TB model: 26mm and 400g versus 19mm and 300g. It's still a mechanical hard drive, so it's tougher than an unprotected portable but slower than a portable SSD, and it shouldn't be jolted mid-transfer. It comes with a USB 3.0 cable for USB-A ports. If your laptop only has USB-C, the LaCie Rugged USB-C, which ships with a native USB-C cable, will be less hassle. Mac users wanting Time Machine will need to reformat the drive first.

FEATURES:

Shock, drop, rain and pressure resistance with protective rubber sleeve

Survived being driven over by a 1-ton car in LaCie testing (cosmetic damage only)

USB 3.0 speeds, up to 4x faster than USB 2.0

Bus powered, one cable for power and data

Compact enough for a backpack or camera bag

SPECIFICATIONS:

Model: LaCie Rugged Mini 4TB (LAC9000633)

Capacity: 4TB

Interface: USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 compatible)

Power: USB bus powered

Durability: Drop, shock, rain and pressure resistant, rubber sleeve

System requirements: Computer with a USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port; Windows or macOS

Free disk space: 600MB minimum recommended

Dimensions: 86 x 26 x 135mm

Weight: 400g

Warranty: 3 Year Limited

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

1x LaCie Rugged Mini 4TB drive

1x USB 3.0 cable (USB 2.0 compatible)

1x Quick Install Guide

Why LaCie?

LaCie is Seagate's creative-professional brand, and its orange rugged drives have been a common sight on photo shoots and film sets for years.
