That split is exactly what a streaming or content build needs, and it's why twenty threads here feel more useful than the raw number suggests. Add UHD 770 graphics and 25MB of cache, and this is a well-rounded chip for a machine that games hard and works hard.

The power number to plan around

65W is the base figure; under sustained all-core load this chip pulls up to 180W, so a decent tower cooler is required — the bundled cooler will let it throttle. It's also locked, so no overclocking. And LGA1700 is now an end-of-life socket: this is an excellent buy on a board you already own or find cheaply, but if you're building fresh with an eye on upgrades, the Core Ultra platform or AM5 have futures ahead of them.

FEATURES:

8 Performance-cores + 4 Efficient-cores, 20 threads total

4.9GHz max turbo with 25MB Smart Cache

Intel UHD Graphics 770 on board

Supports DDR4 or DDR5 depending on the motherboard

PCIe 5.0 and 4.0 support

SPECIFICATIONS:

Model: Intel Core i7-12700 (BX8071512700)

Total Cores: 12 (8 Performance-cores + 4 Efficient-cores)

Threads: 20

P-core Base Frequency: 2.1 GHz

Max Turbo Frequency: 4.9 GHz

Cache: 25 MB Intel Smart Cache

Processor Base Power: 65 W

Maximum Turbo Power: 180 W

Socket: FCLGA1700

Memory: DDR5 up to 4800 MT/s or DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s, 2 channels, max 128 GB

Integrated Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 770

PCI Express: PCIe 5.0 and 4.0, up to 20 lanes

Unlocked for Overclocking: No

Warranty: 3 Year

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

Intel Core i7-12700 processor

Intel stock cooler (as supplied in the retail box)

Documentation

Why Intel?

Splitting work between performance and efficiency cores is what lets one machine game and encode at the same time without either suffering.
