It's UVC, so it works plug and play over USB-C with Windows, Mac and USB-C iPads, and with apps like OBS and Discord as well as Elgato Studio. It records 4K at 60fps, or 1080p at up to 120fps, and passes your game through to your TV or monitor at up to 4K60 HDR10 or 1080p240 with VRR, so you play on the big screen with no lag while the PC records. A 3.5mm analogue input lets you mix in chat or commentary audio. It's well suited to Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series S setups.

Where the 4K X makes more sense

The 4K S uses HDMI 2.0, so passthrough tops out at 4K60 and 1440p120. If you have a 4K 120Hz or 144Hz TV and a PS5 or Xbox Series X, the HDMI 2.1 Game Capture 4K X keeps those modes. HDR capture on the 4K S is limited to 1080p60 and only on Windows. It needs a USB 3.0 Type-C port and, on Windows, Windows 11 with an 8th-gen Core i5 or Ryzen and a GTX 10-series class GPU. It only captures unencrypted HDMI, so disable HDCP on PlayStation first.

FEATURES:

4K60 capture with HDR10 support (HDR capture Windows only)

Up to 1080p240 passthrough with VRR

Play-through preview latency as low as 30ms on capable setups

USB-C and UVC plug and play

Works with Windows, Mac and iPad

SPECIFICATIONS:

Model: Elgato Game Capture 4K S (10GBR9901)

Input: HDMI 2.0 (unencrypted), 3.5mm analogue audio

Output: HDMI 2.0 (lag-free passthrough)

Passthrough: Up to 2160p60, 1440p120, 1080p240

Capture: 2160p60, 1440p60, 1080p120, 1080p60, 720p60, 576p, 480p

HDR10 passthrough: Up to 2160p60

HDR10 capture: Up to 1080p60 (Windows only)

VRR: Yes

Interface: USB 3.0 Type-C, UVC

Dimensions: 112 x 72 x 18mm

Weight: 90g

Windows: Windows 11 or later; Intel Core i5 8th gen or AMD Ryzen; GeForce 10-series or equivalent

Mac/iPad: macOS 14.2 or later, or iPadOS 18 with USB-C; Apple M1 or better

Software: Elgato Studio (free download)

Warranty: Elgato limited warranty

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

Game Capture 4K S

USB-C to C cable (150cm)

HDMI 2.0 cable (150cm)

Why Elgato?

Elgato has made game capture hardware for well over a decade, and its free Elgato Studio software handles recording without subscriptions or watermarks.
