In games the difference from its X sibling is small, and for anyone who isn't overclocking, that 65W envelope means less heat in the case, a quieter machine and no cooler to buy. It's the sensible mid-range choice on AM5 right now.

Six cores, honestly assessed

Six Zen 5 cores are plenty for gaming and will stay that way for years, but the moment you add streaming, encoding or heavy compile work on top, you'll want more threads. The Ryzen 7 9700X is the natural step. And if the machine is purely for games and you can stretch, the 3D V-Cache chips — 7800X3D and 9800X3D — are in a different league for frame rates specifically. The 9600 is the balanced choice, not the extreme one.

FEATURES:

Zen 5 architecture on the AM5 socket

Full 32MB L3 cache and PCIe 5.0

Wraith Stealth cooler included

65W TDP for a cool, quiet build

Integrated Radeon graphics for display-out

SPECIFICATIONS:

Model: AMD Ryzen 5 9600 (100-100000718BOX)

Cores / Threads: 6 / 12

Base Clock: 3.8 GHz

Max Boost Clock: Up to 5.2 GHz

L2 Cache: 6 MB

L3 Cache: 32 MB

Integrated Graphics: AMD Radeon Graphics (2 GPU cores, 2200 MHz)

Default TDP: 65 W

Socket: AM5

Process Node: TSMC 4nm FinFET (CPU cores), 6nm FinFET (I/O die)

Memory: DDR5, dual channel, up to 256 GB

PCI Express: PCIe 5.0

Unlocked for Overclocking: Yes

Bundled Cooler: AMD Wraith Stealth

Warranty: 3 Year

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

AMD Ryzen 5 9600 processor

AMD Wraith Stealth cooler

Documentation and case badge

Why AMD?

Zen 5 landed on the same AM5 socket as Zen 4, so an existing board takes this chip with a BIOS update and nothing else.
