Six Zen 4 cores with a high 4.2GHz base clock handle modern games and everyday work smoothly, and 65W keeps the bundled Wraith Stealth cooler and an ordinary power supply comfortable. The real value is the platform: an AM5 board and DDR5 memory bought now can later take a much faster Ryzen without replacing anything else. This is the MPK (multipack) version, which ships in AMD's bulk packaging rather than an individual retail box; the processor is the same as the boxed 8400F.

Know what the "F" and the cache mean

"F" means no integrated graphics, so a graphics card is mandatory and there is no display output without one. Like the rest of the 8000 series it carries 16MB of L3 and PCIe 4.0, versus 32MB and PCIe 5.0 on the Ryzen 5 7600 and 9600. In practice that costs a few frames rather than a whole performance tier, but if you want the bigger cache, compare the 7600 on price. The Wraith Stealth is fine at stock settings; buy a tower cooler if you plan to tune it or want lower noise.

FEATURES:

Entry point onto AM5 with a long upgrade runway

High 4.2GHz base clock for the class

AMD Wraith Stealth cooler included

DDR5 support up to 256GB

Unlocked, with Precision Boost Overdrive, Curve Optimizer and EXPO

SPECIFICATIONS:

Model: AMD Ryzen 5 8400F (100-100001591MPK)

Packaging: MPK (multipack)

Architecture: Zen 4, TSMC 4nm FinFET

Cores / Threads: 6 / 12

Base Clock: 4.2 GHz

Max Boost Clock: Up to 4.7 GHz

L2 / L3 Cache: 6 MB / 16 MB

Default TDP: 65 W (cTDP 45-65 W)

Socket: AM5

Supported Chipsets: A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B840, B850, X870, X870E

Memory: DDR5, dual channel, up to 256 GB (DDR5-5200 with 2 modules)

PCI Express: PCIe 4.0 (20 lanes total, 16 usable)

Integrated Graphics: None, discrete graphics card required

Unlocked for Overclocking: Yes

Max Operating Temperature: 95°C

Bundled Cooler: AMD Wraith Stealth

Warranty: 3 Year

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

AMD Ryzen 5 8400F processor (MPK packaging)

AMD Wraith Stealth cooler

Why AMD?

AMD has committed to AM5 well into the future, so a board bought now keeps earning its money for years.
