The 4500 gets you there for the price of a budget quad-core, includes a cooler in the box so there's nothing extra to buy, and sips 65W so a modest PSU is fine. Pair it with an RTX 4060 or RX 7600 and it will keep the card fed at 1080p in almost everything. For a first build on a tight budget, this is where we'd start rather than anything with four cores.

The catch worth knowing

The 4500 is a Renoir-based chip with only 8MB of L3 cache and PCIe 3.0 — half the cache of the Ryzen 5 5500 and a generation behind on the PCIe bus. In cache-sensitive games you'll see the gap. It also has no integrated graphics, so a discrete card is mandatory. If your budget stretches even slightly further, the 5500 or 5600 are meaningfully faster for not much more. Buy the 4500 when every rand counts.

FEATURES:

6C/12T at a genuine entry-level price

Wraith Stealth cooler in the box — no extra cooling spend

Unlocked on B450, B550 and X570 boards

65W TDP suits small cases and budget power supplies

Straight upgrade path to Ryzen 5000 on the same board

SPECIFICATIONS:

Model: AMD Ryzen 5 4500 (100-100000644BOX)

Cores / Threads: 6 / 12

Base Clock: 3.6 GHz

Max Boost Clock: Up to 4.1 GHz

L2 Cache: 3 MB

L3 Cache: 8 MB

Integrated Graphics: None — discrete graphics card required

Default TDP: 65 W

Socket: AM4

Process Node: TSMC 7nm FinFET

Memory: DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s, dual channel, up to 128 GB

PCI Express: PCIe 3.0

Unlocked for Overclocking: Yes

Bundled Cooler: AMD Wraith Stealth

Warranty: 3 Year

WHAT'S IN THE BOX:

AMD Ryzen 5 4500 processor

AMD Wraith Stealth cooler

Documentation and case badge

Why AMD?

AMD ships a usable cooler with its 65W chips, which quietly saves you a few hundred rand on a budget build.
